Passengers

genoa_crociere.jpgSince the early 90s, Genoa has developed into a thriving destination for cruise and ferry operators. Passenger figures exceeded 3.1 million in 2006. The driving force behind Genoa’s fast growth in passenger traffic has been the expansion and restructuring programme of the dedicated state-of the-art terminal facilities, a process which is still underway and is instrumental in strengthening further Genoa’s market position in the Mediterranean.

Two purpose-built terminals are currently dedicated to cruise traffic. Ponte dei Mille opened in 1991: rather than erecting a totally new structure, the historic Marittime Station was transformed into a modern facility ensuring maximum safety and comfort for passengers. The terminal building covers 10,000 sqm, and latest generation vessels can be accommodated at the three berths. The art deco Ponte Andrea Doria Cruise Terminal opened in 1932 and is equipped to handle 2 large cruise ships and over 6,000 passengers. This terminal, which provides maximum passenger comfort and security, is due to be upgraded with a new extension. Both terminals follow the design principles of a modern airport terminal, The facilities were built in compliance with IMO security criteria, whilst the airport style check-in procedures mean that waiting is kept to a minimum.

Ferry passenger traffic is served by three dedicated terminals featuring a total of 12 berths which can also accommodate cruise vessels in virtue of the maximum comfort offered by the facilities. The boarding procedures have been linked into a sophisticated EDI system via the 19 check-in gates for vehicles and passengers. The ferry passenger port features a 80,000 sqm pre-boarding parking area for passengers and vehicles, and a separate 100,000 sqm truck park. The Port of Genoa offers regular ferry services to Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Spain and North Africa.
