S. Stefano Magra Rail terminal
In a world scene where containers growth makes the demand for goods transport and services always higher, logistics and port systems are now the decisive factors for the Italian production’s competitiveness on international markets.
The national ports will be able to have a leading role only by creating efficient and integrated subsystems of infrastructures and inland services, most of all as regards rail services. At today, the port of la Spezia moves by rail 32% of its traffic, like the Interporto of Parma.
The realisation of a shuttle service between the port of La Spezia and the Interporto CEPIM in Parma will increase both the port traffic and the port system competitiveness, with respect of the environment and the urban areas. This work foresees the realisation of an intermodal platform in S. Stefano Magra, behind the port, with lifting means dedicated to rail wagons loading operations, and will cut down the road traffic by using the operative areas linked direct with the port. This way, the port of La Spezia will be direct linked with the Interporto of Parma through a shuttle service with 36-52 teu trains (1,200-1,600 tons). This project will allow to reduce rail handling’s cost as well by developing infrastructural facilities and logistics activities reaching the area of Verona. Rail transport becomes this way more competitive than road transport.
